Changes in the biodiversity and ecology of the oceans can be reconstructed using historical and instrumental measurements, and waste tips left from the human consumption of seafood’s. However further back in time we have to read the book that nature has written - histories of the marine environment encoded in sediments and in shells. These narratives can only be read using advanced and state of the art techniques that provide the means to unlock nature's memories. We can then use these narratives of what actually happened, and when, to compare with computer simulations that help us to understand the mechanisms, and consequences, of human impact on the oceans.
