Identification of the Storegga event offshore Shetland.

A core collected by the SEACHANGE Discovery cruise from the Fetlar Basin in 2022 was found to contain an abrupt coarsening of sediments within an otherwise muddy sequence. Very detailed radiocarbon dating demonstrated that this layer was coincident with the huge Storegga submarine landslide offshore Norway at 8.2 ka BP. It has been demonstrated that this generated a tsunami across the North Atlantic, but the data in this new paper demonstrates submarine sediment destabilization as a result of the passage of tsunami wave. This has implications for the risks to submarine structures.
