Oliver Craig

Professor of Archaeological Science

Prof Oliver Craig is a biomolecular archaeologist, which involves the recovery of proteins, lipids and DNA from ancient skeletal remains and archaeological artefacts to provide insights into past human activities.

His particular interests lie in temporal transitions and variability in human diets, cuisine and subsistence practices and the impact that dietary changes had on social evolution, health and the environment. Oliver has over 15 years of experience of isotope analysis of individual compounds from archaeological samples through GC-C-IRMS (gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry). He has also written extensively on the transition to agriculture in the Baltic region and led several major research projects throughout this region.

Oliver will oversee the stable isotope analysis of archaeological fish and marine mammal bone to examine changes in the marine food web through time. He will help coordinate the team at the University of York and contribute to Work Package 1 drawing upon his experience of North Sea and Baltic prehistory.
