André Carlo Colonese
Director of Research in Environmental Archaeology
André is an environmental archaeologist at the Department of Prehistory and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He leads the Molecular Archaeology Lab and the EarlyFoods research group.
André's research focuses on the origins and evolving nature of past food production systems, as well as the interactions between early societies and coastal and ocean environments in South America and southern Europe. His group combines zooarchaeology, biomolecular archaeology (using techniques such as light stable isotopes, proteomics, and lipidomics), along with analyses of historical records and traditional knowledge to assess long-term changes in coastal fisheries in Brazil and West Africa. They also explore small-scale agricultural and husbandry practices in lowland South America and Europe during prehistoric times.
André is the Principal Investigator of the ERC-Consolidator project TRADITION, which investigates the historical ecology of small-scale fisheries in Brazil and their legacy for present-day food security and poverty alleviation. He collaborates on the SEACHANGE project, focusing on coastal environmental reconstruction in Babitonga Bay, in southern Brazil.
